Book course

Your life is a series of choices. For every path you choose, countless others remain untaken. Without realising it yourself, your most banal choice can end up changing your life forever. You’ll never know how your life could have been different. Never? Unless you end up in the midnight library where all the lives you didn’t lead are carefully kept by the librarian. There, you will have a chance to discover what was behind the other door.

Midnight Library is a show format for the theatrical improviser that loves to ask the question: “what if?” Rehearsing this show format will sharpen two key skills: paying close attention to what you are receiving from your partners, and building lasting relationships between the characters. By playing from a place of calm and creating variations of our protagonist’s life, we can make the audience experience a wholesome show with drama and authenticity that warms their heart while making them smile and chuckle.

This improvised play is inspired by the book by Matt Haig. Each show, we see a new protagonist trying out their shot at a new life. Will the clock keep ticking after midnight?

In order to be considered for this module, please send an application to info@improbubble.com outlining your impro experience (we recommend 2 years of prior experience, including stage time).

What you’ll experience

  • A professional approach to working on and rehearsing for a format

  • Personal feedback

  • The nuts and bolts of putting a show together from every aspect (including production, which is a mandatory module component)

  • How to work well with a group of improvisers when you are not a troupe

  • Work on the specific improv skills, needed for the format, in particular: paying attention to your scene partners, bridging gaps in time, building lasting relationships between characters.

Who this is for

This is one of our Academy classes. These courses are intended for ambitious and advanced improvisers who already have at least 2-3 years of impro experience (including performance experience) who want to level up and work at a professional or semi-professional level.

There will be an audition and application process to select the participants for this course. Successful applicants will also be considered for future ImproBubble productions with our professional troupes.

Feedback will be an essential component of this course, as will a personal commitment from each individual to attend a production training as well as to take personal responsibility in the promotion of this show. The participants’ presence at each class is a requirement; it will be up to the discretion of the director whether they get to perform if there are absences.

About the teacher

Ben Verhoeven

Ben Verhoeven is an improviser and teacher from Antwerp, Belgium. He’s known for his work on the intersection between science and (improvised) theatre. His more rational and analytical approach also features in his artistic endeavours and performing style. Ben has a secure and calm stage presence while thoroughly committing to the show at hand with a solid awareness of the stage, players and scene. Oh, and he loves improvising musical theatre!

Ben is three time winner of the Flemish longform improv competition Kemphanen, with his trio Prism and musical improv group Commotie. He has his own company ERLNMYR combining improvisation and science communication, for example in the AI improvisation show Improbotics. Ben is an improvisation teacher at Wisper and used to teach at Conservatorium Mechelen for four years.
